The Beauty of Exmoor

picture of Exmoor stream near Simondsbath Visit Exmoor and experience the stark wild beauty of the moor and the picturesque serenity of the wooded valleys and thatched cottages. Walk where Henry Williamson walked, visit Lorna Doone country.

Exmoor has inspired many great writers. Charles Kingsley, Rudyard Kipling, Henry Williamson, A G Bradley, R D Blackmore to name but a few. It has also been an inspiration to many artists over the years for the same reasons - The marked contrast between the remote, stark moorland, and the secluded villages, snugly protected in the narrow wooded valleys; the sudden dash of the Moor down onto the ragged rocks of the North Devon Coast; the wildlife, the red deer, the rivers.

All this is also reflected in the people and families who fought to eke out and retain their way of life way of life through the centuries. They even have their own breeds of dog and pony. The Exmoor pony is renowned worldwide, and true Exmoor ponies are much in demand. The ubiquitous Jack Russell Terrier, now re-named the Parson Jack Russell, was originally bred as a hunting terrier by the Reverend Jack Russell in the 19th Century. He lived as a curate and then rector in Exmoor parishes for the whole of his adult life.
